TV Shows That Make Me Want to Travel

TV can be a fun way to escape reality, to immerse yourself in another place and another time. But every now and then, TV can also highlight how breathtaking our world really is.

The five shows below ditched the sound stage, braved the elements, and relied on the raw beauty of their natural surrounds to set the scene. The results were well worth it. If these shows don’t make you want to grab your passport and get on a plane, I’m not sure what will.

Bloodline

Bloodline - Florida Keys

 Islamorada, Florida

Family drama aside, I wouldn’t mind spending some time at the Rayburn family resort. The Florida Keys look incredibly relaxing with their white sands, palm trees, and vividly blue-colored water.

Outlander

Outlander - Scotland

Scotland

I don’t have Starz so I actually haven’t had the opportunity to check out Outlander, but from what I’ve seen the setting looks gorgeous. The series is shot in the Scottish Highlands and fans of the TV series can even visit filming locations.

Top of the Lake

Top of the Lake - New Zealand

Queenstown, New Zealand

Doesn’t New Zealand looks incredible? The most I’ve ever seen of the country was from the window of the Auckland airport, so that doesn’t really count. Like with the show  Bloodline, the fictional world of  Top of the Lake is not one I’d want to visit, but I’m going to assume the real New Zealand is much more inviting.

Hannibal

Hannibal - Florence

Florence, Italy

Hannibal  typically shoots in and around Toronto but for the third season Bryan Fuller went for broke (possibly literally in regards to the show’s meager budget) and shot some scenes in Italy. Nature is pretty, but I have to admit that that’s some really impressive architecture they’ve got there.

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones - International

Northern Ireland, Croatia, Morocco, Iceland, and more

You had to know this show would make the list, after all  Game of Thrones has probably set a new standard for TV production. Plus, how awesome would it be to experience the beauty of these countries without the fear of White Walkers or getting caught up in the politics and violence of the Iron Throne? If you’re interested in seeing the specific sites from the show, check out these filming location tours for Iceland, Croatia, and Northern Ireland.
